Sacred Silence: An Immersion in Contemplative Practice

Winter's invitation is to move downward and inward, to join the plants and hibernators in darkness, waiting, and unknowing. This weekend Practice Circle is an opportunity to follow this seasonal rhythm by entering deeply into sacred silence through the practice of silent prayer. While this will be our primary emphasis during the weekend, we will also experience:

  • Lectio Divina or 'sacred reading' - an ancient monastic practice of listening to the Spirit speak to our hearts through Scripture
  • Sacred Chanting - no prior singing experience necessary!
  • Embodying Prayer - gentle, natural movements and gestures that complement our sitting practice
  • Eucharistic Worship - all are welcome

This is a wonderful opportunity to go deeply into silence and solitude within a community of support. People of all spiritual traditions (or none) are welcome. The only prerequisite is some prior experience with silent prayer or meditation. We will make available an optional instruction or review of the practice of Centering Prayer, a method of silent prayer within the Christian contemplative tradition.

Retreat Guides: Rev. Steve Bonsey, Rev. Amy DiSanto, Allen Bourque, & Kerstin Lipke

Retreat begins: Friday, February 26 at 6:00 pm with a light supper

Retreat ends: Sunday, February 28 at 3:00 pm after lunch.

Cost: All are welcome at Hallelujah Farm. The usual contribution for a weekend Practice Circle is $200. However, we are grateful for your support of their ministry of hospitality in the amount you feel you can afford.

Venue: Accommodations are in shared double rooms.  For more information about Hallelujah Farm go to www.hallelujahfarm.com

A Day of Deepening Silence: Centering Prayer and the Human Purpose

  • St Mary - St Catherine of Siena Parish (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A workshop organized by Contemplative Outreach of Boston  at St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, Charlestown, MA, with LDI's Director of Wisdom Study, Rev. Steven Bonsey.

The practice of Centering Prayer draws its inspiration from an ancient stream of Christian spiritual tradition.  Through the centuries monastic communities, formed by a rule of life, have preserved for us the "spiritual technology" of transformation.  Religious pluralism in our increasingly global communities has made us aware of the mystical stream running through all of the world’s great religious traditions.  The contemplative stream offers practical wisdom regarding the means by which we join in the work of our own and the world’s salvation — that’s, our emergence together into fullness of life.

In this workshop we will reflect on the instrumental role that Centering Prayer plays, along with other Wisdom practices, in the process of our ongoing conversion and the fulfillment of our human purpose.

  • Cost: $30.00 suggested donation
  • Food: Light breakfast and lunch will be provided
  • Parking: 'Resident parking' open to non-residents on Saturdays

Contemplative Leadership Training

  • Hallelujah Farm Retreat Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This retreat is offered for those who know themselves to be called to contemplative leadership, either:

  • as one who convenes, facilitates and/or teaches within a new or existing Contemplative Practice Circles; or
  • one who brings the contemplative spirit and perspective into their leadership in the world, particularly in the realm of social justice and prophetic action.

The retreat will derive its form from the Wisdom Schools, with a rhythm of contemplative practice, teaching & conversation, and conscious manual labor (according to ability), all within a context of natural beauty, bodily rest and silence.

The retreat is offered free of charge, but space is extremely limited. Early application is encouraged.

This retreat is offered by the Leadership Development Initiative and Life Together programs in the Episcopal Diocese of MA, but is open to all who feel so called.

Introduction to Centering Prayer

  • Christ Church, Harvard Square (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Rev. Cn. Steven Bonsey, LDI's Director of Contemplative Study, is leading a workshop at Christ Church, Cambridge, on the practice of centering prayer.

Centering Prayer is prayer of the heart leading to intimacy with God, a practice of quiet and solitude in the "inner chamber." As a modern contemplative Christian practice, it renews the ancient method prescribed in the 14th-century spiritual masterpiece, The Cloud of Unknowing

This training is offered for novice and experienced meditators alike. It includes an historical and theological appreciation of the method, practical instruction, and opportunity for practice and for conversation.

The training is offered free of charge.
